America West Airlines
America West Airlines is a major U.S. carrier based in Phoenix, from which it serves more non-stop destinations with greater frequency than any other carrier.
America West has hubs at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix and McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas. The airline's modern, fuel-efficient fleet consists of Airbus A320s, Airbus A319s, Boeing 757s and Boeing 737s. By the end of 2006, America West expects to take delivery of the new 110-seat A318. The average age of the America West fleet is approximately 10 years.
America West is the only airline to not only survive, but also thrive, since the U.S. airline industry was deregulated. The carrier initiated service on August 1, 1983, with three aircraft and 280 employees. America West grew rapidly, and by 1990 it achieved major-airline status, with annual revenues of more than $1 billion.
Today, America West is a low-fare, full-service airline. Its coast-to-coast route system includes 89 destinations across the U.S., Mexico and Canada with more than 800 daily departures. America West utilizes its Phoenix and Las Vegas hubs as gateways for travel throughout its route network.
America West Express regional service is provided by codesharing agreements with Mesa Airlines, Freedom Airlines and Air Midwest, which are wholly owned subsidiaries of Mesa Air Group, one of the largest regional airlines in the world.
These regional carriers channel traffic to America West's hubs. Through the agreement with Mesa Air Group, America West will continue to extend its route system and enhance its flight schedule as the America West Express regional jet fleet grows to 77 aircraft by 2005.
America West further enhances its operational strength through strategic alliances with British Airways, Northwest Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Big Sky Airlines, and the Taiwanese carrier EVA Airways.
America West Airlines is a wholly owned subsidiary of America West Holdings Corporation. A second subsidiary, The Leisure Company, was formed in 1987 and focuses on services for the leisure-travel market under the brand name America West Vacations. The class B common stock of America West Holdings Corporation trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "AWA."
